Spiritual counselling is a holistic approach which uses your yoga practice as the starting point for creating a life of optimal wellbeing, fulfillment and thriving. I believe that a dedicated and consistent yoga practice can enhance every aspect of your life and empower you to create the life you want to live. You do this by using the lens of yoga as a filter to approach your life in order to gain insight into your habitual patterns and tendencies, thus gaining deeper self-knowledge and understanding. Asana practice, pranayama (breathing techniques), yoga nidra, meditation and mantra are among the tools we will use to guide your journey.
The path of self-enquiry is called svadhyaya in the yoga tradition and historically was an important component of yoga practice. According to traditional teachings, to understand the world around us we must understand ourselves; we gain access to the macro by penetrating the micro. Yogis of age understood that we cannot rely on outer circumstances for our sense of self. Given the uncertainty and unpredictability of the world around us, we must anchor ourselves from within.
Finding inner stability requires excavation of the inner terrain and cultivation of equanimity and steadfastness. Flourishing and resilience come from knowing yourself and your tendencies and developing the requisite skills for self-mastery and maintaining equilibrium in the face of life’s ups and downs. This is no easy task and it is one that provides meaning, depth and purpose to life even in the face of adversity.
Although it is therapeutic, spiritual counseling is not traditional therapy, and I am not a trained therapist. I am a certified philosophical counseler through the American Philosophical Practitioners Association (APPA), and I hold two Masters degrees in philosophy, one from University College Dublin, and one from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Yoga and philosophy make wonderful companions. Yoga is primarily concerned with the journey inward to the self, a journey which is signposted by the question ‘What am I?’ Philosophy can be understood as a system of inquiry, a method of formulating and seeking to answer questions with the aim of furthering understanding. The quest for truth is central to the philosophic endeavor. By the same token the yogic path brings one closer to a life lived in truth and authenticity.
